about

‘Field Studies: Transylvania’ revisits a once-intended regular series of digital releases focusing on field recordings as a way of documenting the auditory environments of places that hold personal significance. The first two field recording releases that started this series appeared a few months apart in late 2017 (Roker) and early 2018 (Bankside); the latest instalment was recorded long before in 2016, in and around Brasov, Romania. The recordings have been treated and remixed a number of times over the years before a final presentation was decided. Rather than a collection of sounds following a short journey through a specific location, ‘Field Studies: Transylvania’ was recorded over a number of days during the first visit to my partner’s hometown and the rural areas nearby.

This release begins with a recording within the Black Church, or Biserica Neagră, the largest Lutheran church in the region. Originally known as the Church of Saint Mary and built during the later years of the 14th century, the place of worship was partially destroyed by a great fire during the Great Turkish War in the late 1600s. The name ‘Black Church’ comes from this event. As a popular tourist destination, the opening field recording captures the sound of patrons moving between the pews as the building reverberates in response to the sounds of a city outside.

Some of my visit to Romania in 2016 was spent away from the city in Covasna County, near the Vâlcele commune. Tracks 2-7 document one day from morning to night; dog walks through the woods in the morning, the distant cacophony of a nearby village in the afternoon, the crackle of roasting aubergines in an outdoor kiln in the evening, and the sound of stray dogs across the village during the night. Three years later I stayed in this area for a longer period, from which the field recordings will one day emerge.

The final recording in this release was captured on the day of departure back to the UK. The sounds of urban construction in the distance signifies the return to normal, away from simplicity and nature and back to the omnipresence of noise.
