'Become Nothing' is the outcome of an introspective approach to understanding the mental health issues I have faced over the past few years. The album was started in early 2018 in response to the volatile side effects experienced when adapting to various anti-depressants; the underlying feeling of hollowness, vivid nightmares, auditory hallucinations, and the withdrawal encountered when changing to a different medication. The album was shelved for over a year before being revisited to soundtrack an unforgiving relapse. As a result, ‘Become Nothing’ is a dark and uncomfortable album. It would be dishonest if it isn’t an uncomfortable listening experience.

The album was created using my trusted and well-worn Fender Telecaster, utilising a range of extended playing techniques and a mess of effects pedals. There are layers of field recordings, creative commons broadcasts on the subject of depression, and computer speech reciting the noted side effects of Mirtazapine.

There were numerous ideas for the album artwork, but I decided the album was best represented without imagery. It is a simple extension on the sensation of becoming nothing.

An additional bonus album has been included as a digital download with all physical purchases of this album. 'Defeatist Drones: to be heard in the dark and alone' – the title is somewhat of an instruction for the listener. The accompanying drone-based album was recorded over a short period of time in January 2020. Although musically lighter, it was inspired by early morning starts and late-night finishes at the time of year where darkness is abundant. I would like to encourage the listener to engage with the album as the title suggests; in darkness and alone. It is my morbid way of saying thanks for supporting what I do.
