about

On February 18th, 2022, parts of the UK and Ireland were issued with red weather warnings as Storm Eunice approached from the west. People were advised not to travel if possible and to remain indoors throughout the duration of the red weather period. In Farnham, this was between 10am and 3pm.

The progression of Storm Eunice, from arrival to the lifting of the read weather warning, was captured in long-form recordings. The recordings gathered include bins toppling and being blown down the street, leaves entering through windows and rustling around the living room, blinds clattering, doors rattling, and the creaks of fences fighting hard to stay upright. There was one moment where the contents of a bin was launched against the window. Recorded indoors, the sounds of a building and the clicks and hum of a fridge can also be heard. Toward the height of the storm as it passed, windows were closed to avoid damage.

'Field Studies: Storm Eunice' differs from previous releases in the ongoing series. Rather than capturing snapshots of interesting events within a soundscape, the process for this release was document the gradual progression of a storm as it approaches, reaches a peak, and then departs.

A new Zoom H3-VR device was used for the recordings, set to capture and reproduce binaural audio. For this reason, headphone listening is recommended. The recordings were treated with basic corrective processing, to reduce rumble below 20Hz and ease high-frequency hiss.
