about

Around the time I was developing an interest in autonomic music, the BBC aired short documentary series on Minimalist music. This coincidental over-lapping of interests sparked a desire to prepare new music with limited input beyond programming synthesizer patches and starting a sequence. For 'Music for Slow-Moving Arpeggiators', deeply modulating synth patches were created and allowed to play themselves via the arpeggiator latch function set to a very low tempo on an old and partially working Korg R3 VA synth. Thanks to the generous modulation matrix within the R3, the seemingly random progressions move in their own direction, drifting in and out and slowly progressing. There are some instances where a selection of parameters were adjusted for variation, but a majority of this album is the product of a synthesizer allowed to play itself. Most of the recording process was simply sitting back and listening once a chord had triggered the sequence.

Once completed, the album was bounced to tape by Alexander Roberts (Kepier Widow/Joseph Curwen) for further texture and to render the music to a specific moment. The gentle tape saturation lends to enhance the retro-futuristic approach to synthesized music in the early stages of Ambient and New Age music. The artwork chosen to support this release are the product of light obstructed by blinds at various points throughout the day.
